Mercedes ESP system is so annoying. I hit the "off" button, but it isn't really off, just less sensitive. I'm trying to pull out on a snow covered main road today, and I'm stuck sideways because the goddamned ESP wants to apply braking when I'm trying to get out of the way. How is this safe?

Oh yeah? My ESP has been off all winter - and not by my choice. It took ABS and traction control with it.

My morning routine :
Get in car.
*Click* ESP off.
*Click* Competitive mode engaged.
Every single time.
I need to find if I can turn it on permanently..may not be safe though, I may accidentally engage launch control in traffic.

I had that problem, spent a year learning everything I could about the system. Finally fixed it. I take it you have a BMW? From my understanding the BMW system can be turned "more" off.

Yep. Can't stand ABS in the snow. Light came on in the dash, removed the bulb.

Could be mistaken, but I think I recall there being a "ritual" to turn everything off on some Mercs.

Every time I get in my wife's BRZ I have to sit and turn of traction control and it bugs the hell out of me (both waiting and knowing I can't just make it completely go away). I wish cars had simple turn dials for adjusting aggressiveness of traction control, stability control, and ABS. Something like 0 to 10, where 0 means that particular system is just off completely.

Manufacturers can't comprehend that people like you exist.

Yes, some mercs. Unfortunately not mine. Don't get me wrong I want ESP when cruising on snow (see: Moose-test), but not when trying to pull out of a gas station.

Auto companies hate the idea of giving you that choice. They want all customers to be mindless zombies.

Auto company lawyers hate the idea of giving you that choice. They want all customers to be mindless zombies that can't sue .
Fixed that for you ;)

I had this happen on my W210 E420. Took out the cruise control too. Turned out to be the "stop light switch", which apparently is not the brake light switch because those still worked.

Mine is off for good. I get reminded when I'm driving sideways down a street. Unintentionally. I thought maybe the battery was the issue ( the battery can cause weird electrical problems) but even after trickle charging all night, still no luck.
